The musical Disney+ series still doesn't have a premiere date, but it does have some first-look images.

“They want to remain true to themselves, but they don’t want to leave anybody out. “Whatever you want to do, they roll with it.” Of course, there will be music liberally sprinkled throughout The Muppets Mayhem’s 10 episodes—classic rock covers as well as original tunes. Teeth, Animal, Floyd, Janis, and Zoot as they record their first album, with the help of human characters played by Lilly Singh (as Nora, an aspiring record producer), Saara Chaudry (as Nora’s sister, a social media influencer), and Tahj Mowery (as the Elecric Mayhem’s #1 fan). A new interview with the show’s co-creators gives us a good idea of what to expect from the series (although, alas, when it’ll arrive is still a mystery). Goldberg reflected on how the show will be different from Muppets shows and movies that’ve come before.

"Everyone has a memory of seeing the Muppets for the first time. Barretta notes that sense of balance and grounding is key to what makes the show (and the Muppets at large) work. It is about the band and not the tone of a variety show." Traditionally, in a reflection of the industry itself, the Muppets have starred opposite white actors. "We are telling a regular story in the real world with Muppets," Goldberg says. But The Muppets Mayhem offers audiences a much more colorful world beyond mere shades of felt. With that in mind, the show also promises lots of fun surprise cameos, as is always the case with the Muppets. People recognize them, but we have the freedom to fill out their backstory and do whatever we want." Goldberg, who also wrote the screenplay for The Muppets Wizard of Oz, the series seeks to open a new avenue for a relationship between Disney+ and the Muppets. "This is just about the band specifically," Goldberg says. In 2016, The Electric Mayhem played a set there, sparking Bill Barretta to wonder what possibilities the characters might have for further storytelling. The show promises to have quite a lot of music included with it. “So we tried to ground everything and keep it realistic as opposed to all of a sudden there’s talking fruit in your fridge.” The realism will apparently continue as the backstories for both humans and Muppets are explored. So, when you have a character that’s really determined to get them to do something, that’s also the comedy of the show. Now the story of the band is being told and details about its members are being filled in, something that has never been done before. While this was happening, York’s and Goldberg had also already been thinking about ideas for a series around the band for eight years. The idea for the series came out of a performance at Outside Lands music festival in 2016 when The Electric Mayhem performed a set.
