Benjamin Pavard's magnificent strike and a dogged midfield showing were enough for France to beat Ireland in their second European qualifier.

But the visitors found a breakthrough shortly after half time, with Pavard sending a shot in off the bar from 20 yards after an Ireland giveaway. And although it was far from convincing this time, France left Dublin with a duo of wins to open up Euro 2024 qualifying. Pavard's wonder strike gave France a 1-0 win over a dogged Ireland side to complete a successful week of Euro 2024 qualifying.

Bites of Ixodes species, Rhipicephalus species, and Dermacentor species were more frequently detected in summer, in the last few days of the spring season, and during the autumn and spring seasons, respectively. massiliae (16%) and Borrelia species (9.0%) in Rhipicephalus ticks. Of 217 patients with available clinical data, 49% (n=107) had symptoms, of which the most frequent ones were local erythema, inoculation eschar, lymphadenopathy, fever, and cutaneous rash, observed among 37, 33, 27, 17, and 15 patients, respectively. Bacteria carried by the ticks were isolated and identified by PCR or serologic methods at the institute. Ticks were sent to the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection in Marseille, France, and identified by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. To identify ticks by molecular techniques, tick deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted, and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified products of the 12S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene were subjected to Sanger sequencing. In total, 418 ticks, obtained from 359 humans, were analyzed, and each patient had one to 16 tick bites. Why is France unable to reach social compromises? (Social Europe)

As today sees a tenth general strike in France against the pension reform, an exit is needed from decrees and street clashes towards negotiated governance.

Yet France’s future depends significantly on its ability to turn the page on authoritarianism and statism in the management of the social sphere. Can France get out of this perverse dynamic, which is leading the country into the wall on a democratic, economic and social level? [labour ordinances](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9forme_du_code_du_travail_en_2017), Macron has openly chosen to follow the opposite path of these attempts at social-democratisation—authoritarianism and statism. Thanks to the spirit of responsibility shown by the trade unions, for once united against this project, this massive opposition took non-violent forms this time (although this has frayed at the margins). But Bernard Thibault’s CGT, which had broken away from the [Parti Communiste Français](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Communist_Party) and was looking for its place in the French institutional landscape, was not hostile. Although ‘ [May ’68](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_68)’ brought new advances for workers’ rights, in the succeeding years the right wing, still in power, and the employers did nothing to encourage social negotiation in a context of increased conflict and a worsening economic crisis. When the left came to power in 1981, it was marked in all its components by statist and Jacobin reflexes towards social rights. Then there was the [Conseil national de la Résistance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Council_of_the_Resistance) and its famous programme, followed by reconstruction and the [Commissariat général du Plan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Planning_Commission_(France)), with which trade unionism was closely associated. [Front populaire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_Front_(France)#:~:text=The%20Popular%20Front%20won%20the%20general%20election%20of%203%20May,Jew%20to%20hold%20that%20office.) with its social conquests but the episode lasted only a few months and was followed by fierce repression during the second world war. In 1895, trade unions and labour exchanges federated to form the Social negotiation remained very limited and trade unionism was actively combated by the public authorities, particularly the government of Georges Clemenceau. One of the first tasks of the revolutionaries was to abolish the guilds holding back economic dynamism.

In a recent Bloomberg survey of life expectancy versus effective retirement age, European countries dominated the Top 20, led by France and Luxembourg, where the average man has 18 healthy years in retirement. “This government has no idea what it means to do this kind of work.” Karine was among several demonstrators who lamented the government’s “refusal” to acknowledge the pénibilité (hardship) endured by low-income workers who perform physically-draining tasks. Holding a black-and-white flag, Karine described herself as a “non-violent anarchist – for now”. The Gilets jaunes converged on the town’s rond-point cacahuète, a peanut-shaped roundabout that protesters held night and day for two months starting in November 2018. In Annonay, the hometown of Labour Minister Olivier Dussopt, the reform’s chief sponsor, some marches rallied as much as half the local population of 16,000, with protesters focusing their fury on the former Socialist who served as the town’s mayor for close to a decade. “People here feel abandoned by the state, which is pulling resources and services out of rural areas,” said Pascaud, the deputy mayor. The high turnout in smaller towns and cities has been a striking feature of France’s biggest protest movement in several decades. Other factors of discontent include poverty, job insecurity and the dearth of public services in rural areas. The local constituency now has an MP from Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally – traditionally the chief beneficiary of voters’ discontent. “In fact we all need to raise our game – it’s the only way we can stop the government.” “The government’s move has mobilised people we’d never seen before,” added Anne Pascaud, a deputy mayor of neighbouring Châlette-sur-Loing, wrapped in the tricolour sash typically worn by elected officials during public events. France’s small and mid-size towns have been at the forefront of the battle against President Emmanuel Macron’s contentious pension reform, in some places staging the biggest rallies in living memory.

Navigating forced heirship in Scotland and France (Lexology)

Forced heirship rules in France divide the estate in to two parts: the legal reserve and the disposable portion. The impact of the DPC on Scottish estates where legal rights apply, remains to be seen. In France, the law that applies to the succession of your estate will be determined with reference to EU Regulation No.650/2012 (“Succession Regulation”) which took effect in 2015. In Scotland, your domicile (the place you call "home") determines which law applies to the succession of your estate on death. While the law of succession in Scotland as compared with France is fundamentally different in many ways, legacies of the historic link between the two nations remain. Scotland's close association with France dates back to 1292 and the Auld Alliance or la "Vielle Alliance", a treaty between Scotland and France in terms of which Scotland aligned itself to France against England.
