Sheffield Wednesday avoid third straight defeat as Lee Gregory ... (Planet Sport)

Title-chasing Sheffield Wednesday hit back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw at Cheltenham.

Flint headed in a fine cross from Barry Bannan to restore hope for Wednesday and Smith supplied the ball in from the right for Gregory to touch in the leveller three minutes from the end. Cheltenham created the better chances in the opening 45 minutes, but David Stockdale kept them out with a string of saves, denying May twice and Keena. Report: Robins 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday (Cheltenham Town FC)

Cheltenham Town took a point in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday to take their unbeaten run to five games in the Sky Bet League One.

Sheffield Wednesday would complete the comeback as Lee Gregory met a low Smith cross to bring the game level in the final minute of the game. Cheltenham took a deserved lead at Sheffield failed to clear Ferry’s ball in, giving the ball to Keena who buried his shot from close range. Keena drew a good save from Stockdale as the ball fell to him close to the penalty spot after Liam Sercombe scuffed his shot into the path of the Irishman.

Sheffield Wednesday are a team far from their best. But the fighting spirit that has taken them to the heart of the League One title race was raised late on ...

Moore’s decision to remove Cameron Dawson from the firing line in place of David Stockdale was a bold one and followed the precedent set back in December when roles were reversed. That is slammed the post was a gut-wrench – what a moment that could have been. Though their run of matches without a win was stretched to four, the nature of their fightback will be the optimists’ talking point. A former player of Darren Moore’s at Doncaster Rovers, he came in with four in four – and showed every piece of confidence you’d expect. How it must have dropped when Will Vaulks’ shot raced towards the Robins’ goal in the last second. Seven minutes later a headache turned migraine when May made it two.

The breathless action continued at both ends and Wednesday showed a fighters' heart. Wilks and Gregory missed chances before the latter had his moment, from Smith's low centre. Instead had to settle for a point after goals from substitute Aden Flint - his first in Owls’ colours - and Lee Gregory, with the latter levelling three minutes from time. Then the fun began. They would have taken a point after 75 minutes, for sure. But Wednesday dug deep and showed the stamina, strength and character of a stayer to rescue a point in a remarkable second-half and frantic finale.

The results leaves Wednesday one point behind Argyle and with a significantly better goal difference but they are now on the same number of games. Argyle have not played since they won 2-0 away to Accrington Stanley last Tuesday, but they have seen two of their promotion rivals slip up since then. Sheffield Wednesday missed out on a second opportunity in four days to replace Plymouth Argyle at the top of League One as they drew 2-2 away to Cheltenham Town tonight. Referee Paul Howard added on six extra minutes at the end of the second half but there was to be no late winning goal for either side.

Darren Moore sends coy injury update on influential Sheffield ... (Football League World)

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore didn't want to give too much away when he was quizzed on the fitness of George Byers and Josh Windass.

That’s because both have proven themselves to be top players at this level, so it was going to be difficult to bring similar quality into the XI. Whilst the Owls remain in a good position to win automatic promotion, that form has left fans concerned, and they’re desperate to have the duo back for the run-in. And, it’s fair to say the pair have been missed, with the draw at Cheltenham last night extending Wednesday’s winless run to four.

A look at four takeaways after Wednesday's thrilling 2-2 draw down in Cheltenham - a result that saw Darren Moore's side again miss out on the chance to go ...

The eve of this game was dominated by talk of who Moore would select in his midfield. The continued absence of George Byers had led to some fans and pundits tipping a left-field change by Moore. The decision to bring David Stockdale back into the side came as a slight eye-raiser when teamsheets landed an hour before kick-off in Gloucestershire. Chances came and went for an unlikely winner for the Owls but it wasn't to be. But even the most ardent of Wednesdayites would be hard-pressed to say that they would have deserved it. No team can be expected to achieve promotion if they continually shoot themselves in the foot as the Owls have done in the space of the last eight days or so.
