Lecturers Strike Ends: Who Knew Lecturers Could Bargain Harder Than My Negotiating Skills?

Kenyan universities - Ksh.9.7 billion deal - lecturers strike - National Treasury - UASU - Universities Academic Staff Union

After three weeks of missing lectures, students can finally breathe a sigh of relief as university lecturers return to work! #KenyaNews #UASU

After a tumultuous three-week strike that left university students feeling more lost than a tourist without GPS, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has finally called off the strike. This strike, which lasted 26 days, had disrupted classes across public universities in Kenya, creating a vacuum of knowledge and coffee breaks for both students and faculty alike. Fortunately, students can now dust off their notebooks and start preparing for the upcoming semester, as lecturers prepare to return to teaching.

The recent agreement, which saw the government commit a whopping Sh9.7 billion to meet the lecturers' pay demands, came as sweet music to the ears of many weary undergraduates. With Sh4.3 billion allocated for immediate implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2021-2025 period, the rest of the funds providing additional support and assurance for a smooth academic year. The timing could not be better, as students eagerly awaited the return of their professors to avoid turning their university years into a season of discontent.

The deal was a result of negotiations between UASU and university councils, leaving both sides relieved and optimistic for a brighter academic future. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala played pivotal roles in facilitating the dialogue, showcasing that, sometimes, even the fiercest debates can lead to fruitful solutions—especially when money is on the table! As the last banners of protest were taken down and messages of "Let’s Get Back to Work!" filled the campus air, students began counting down the days until lectures resume on November 25th.

Interestingly, the recent lecturer strike is not just about increased pay but rather signifies the persistent battle for better working conditions in institutions of higher learning. After all, happy teachers make for enthusiastic learners, and who wouldn’t want professors who are ready to share their wisdom instead of grumbling about paychecks? To put a cherry on top, did you know that public universities in Kenya comprise nearly 1.4 million students across 31 public universities? Now that’s a lot of students relieved to have their favorite lecturers back on campus!
